Protoshare Interactive Web development helps speed up site mapping pure and simple. You can quickly mock up a site in a single language and edit the structure purely using drag an drop to re-order menus and linked pages. This is a big advantage when you can do it on-line and live for clients to follow along with.

Prototyping can be a time consuming task for deep and/or complex web sites. There are many tools to accomplish the same job, but leveraging the internet and the affordable monthly rate plans point to a bright future for this fantastic tool.

Renovation Time

Everything is planned and ready to go once we get our building permit. It is a very exciting project we have in mind. We're hoping to convert our commercial building, formerly a home converted to a restaurant converted to a bailiffs office and now a handsome design studio, into the belle of the block. We've already started work on the deck at the back which is nearly done.

As we set out on a brand new year I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our clients and suppliers a brilliant new year.

As always, January brings with it the onset of our busiest time of year. We are very lucky to be working on some great projects this winter, such as the visual identity for Assisted Human Reproduction Canada and Service Canada and a challenging design project for the Public Health Agency of Canada.

We continue to diversify into some really interesting new businesses. Digital Media Base will be our first real foray into e-commerce which has us quite excited. Another involves a new Canadian product, the Luminite, which we will be using as a brand new advertising medium at outdoor events, hopefully beginning with Winterlude.

Digital Image Tool, a batch image processor we have been distributing as freeware on CNET, has been upgraded and uploaded to our server. This nice little application allows you to quickly process large quantities of images with ease - including flexible resizing, watermarking, renaming, compression preview, smart saving while protecting original images files. Originally built as a means for us to batch process image collections we work with, it has evolved into a photographers "Swiss Army knife." Imagetool 2.0 is the free component of Digital Media Base and is being upgraded as part of the preparation for BETA testing. If you have a mess of digital assets you need to organize, Media Base is a hybrid player/viewer and data base. It plays or views all video formats, music formats, flash assets and allows you to sort, process, play, share, organize and most importantly search.

We have been working on this project for some years now: a few months at a time, when we could afford to of course. The challenge originally presented to us was “to organize large quantities of media files” with very few tools made specifically to help, we made our own, and surprisingly, it seems our development of a sophisticated 'player' and 'processor' was flexible and adaptable enough to let us accomplish many unique tasks. Two years of refinement have brought us to this upcoming BETA test. If BETA's of image, sound, flash, and video players interest you we are just about to launch ours. That list does no justice to the features we have been able to include, but since this is just a teaser, I’ll leave it at that.

Rebranding Ourselves

It's the end of a long summer, and many, many renovation projects! One of these renovations was to our too long ignored brand. After much hand wringing and many wild, speculative designs, we ended up with what amounts to a refreshed logo and look that was largely inspired by our move to new digs.

The web site was fun to develop and is a refreshing change in our profile. We opted for simplicity and clarity in the presentation of our information and portfolio. We are currently producing the French equivalent to what is currently live and we are committed to expanding upon this new site framework. The site is fully scaleable and has a nice cinematic feel to the portfolio section, which we feel was a real weakness in our old site. Alas, like the shoemaker's children it's always our own communications initiatives that get left until last, and ironically, what we seem to fret about most! This is our starting point and we expect to add some surprising twists to the sites theme over the next few months to keep it fresh and interesting.

For the moment we are hard at work on other deliverables for our clients, but we do hope this start will enable us to start extending our profile into new and intriguing markets where we can encounter new creative challenges.

Basecamp - Exceptional Project Management

Wavertree has been using Basecamp, a web-based project management tool, to manage our design and print projects for one month now. I have to say I am quite impressed with how easy it is to use. The way it is set up, you do not need to create mass amounts of detail which is time consuming. You only need to input relevant information, milestones and to-do lists that allow everyone to accomplish their tasks and meet deadlines. I will write a more detailed description in the near future as we become fully accustomed to all of the nuances.
